Networking sites to focus on Travel and Business

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

andrew_montgomery2.jpg There was a very interesting article in Timesonline recently highlighting some of the difficulties that social networking sites will be facing in the future. The article describes “Facebook Fatigue” syndrome (not sure if this is actually a clinical condition, but no doubt it will find its way into the Dictionary at some stage). This looks to have 2 distinct causes. Firstly that folks are finding it difficult to manage their networks which have grown too large and secondly because they are losing some of their cool for many users because everyone has a Facebook account: or so it would appear.

The article quotes some good stuff from Nielsen Online, the definitive authority for online user numbers. What they seem to be saying is that everyone likes the 15 minutes of fame from posting on to the internet, but users really need useful online tools. That probably explains why Nielsen reckon the big plays for networking sites will now be around wealth business and travel. We are rather pleased to hear this as Whosintown is about business and travel and putting the 2 things together creating not only smarter networking opportunities but smarter business travel. We’ve already been approached by several organisations who promote greener business travel because Whosintown can help to achieve this. Its fair to say we are all interested in lowering carbon emissions and if we can help to do this whilst running a successful site for travelling business people then we’re going to be pretty happy.

Business Travel Show update

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Andrew MontgomeryWhosintown had a great time at the recent Business Travel Show. We were hoping to meet with some of the key decision makers in the business travel world at Earls Court and we certainly weren’t disappointed. It became apparent that one of the key benefits Whosintown offers, is going to be the ability to lower carbon emissions both for the individual and for organisations large and small. Without dropping any names at this stage, lets just say that we got a great response from executives at one of the UK’s leading carbon advisory orgs and also from the kind folks from one of the larger city councils who are promoting a smarter travel policy for business travellers within their city. In fact their mantra is very similar to what Whosintown promotes which is cut your carbon emissions, save money by going on fewer business trips but make each of those trips more productive.

We also had some very promising meetings with airlines and train companies. The angle these guys seem to want to take is plugging Whosintown into their loyalty card and executive club members. Lots of interesting things to look at here including affiliations with airlines and hotels working together to increase business and also with car hire companies working from airport or hotel sites. Once we got talking to some of these guys the number of ways to use the Whosintown service really started to grow. We were hoping that we might have bumped into some people from our space at the show, but they hadn’t taken time to turn up or maybe they just didn’t know the show was on.

Maybe because we were the only company of our type at the show, we got interviewed by several business travel magazines including the influential Trave Trade Gazette amongst others. We are looking forward to reading the articles when they are published. So hopefully this time next year we’ll have our own stand at the show, but in the meantime thanks to the guys at Business Taxis for letting use their stand for hanging out on!!
